Have questions about mobility options and Medicare?
Here’s what you need to know: A Step-by-Step guide to Medicare Coverage
The criteria for power mobility devices (i.e. power wheelchairs and scooters) has changed. American Mobility wants to help you understand those changes. To determine ifs a power wheelchair or scooter is right for you – and is covered under Medicare, you’ll need to follow these steps:
STEP 1
Visit with your physician for a face-to-face examination and a discussion abut your mobility options. Medicare now requires a face-to-face exam with your treating physician prior to the physician writing a prescription for a power mobility device.
During your exam, your physician must first consider the use of a cane, walker and manual wheelchair before considering a scooter or power wheelchair. If your physician feels your mobility needs must be resolved with a scooter or power wheelchair, that fact will be supported in your medical records and a prescription will be written.
Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist may also conduct an additional assessment if your doctor thinks its necessary.
STEP 2
Have your doctor fax or mail the written prescription and supporting medical records to American Mobility. We must receive the written prescription and supporting documentation within 45 days from the date of your face-to-face examination.
Once received American Mobility will work with you and your doctor to determine the right scooter or power wheelchair for your particular needs.
STEP 3
American Mobility will conduct a home assessment to make sure you have adequate access and maneuverability space.
The primary reason for a power mobility device is to compensate for your mobility limitations within your home and your ability to perform activities of daily life including toileting, grooming, bathing, dressing and eating. Its therefore critical to determine if your home environment will support the use of a scooter or wheelchair.
This home assessment may be completed at any time in the process of obtaining your power mobility device.
STEP 4
American Mobility will order your product, deliver it to your home, and will show you how to use it. Delivery of your scooter or power wheelchair must take place no more than 120 days after your face-to-face exam.
